Yeah, It may be better to lower the open files back to 1024, 
I'll get a max open file error but at least the processes don't hang.

I installed the Itanium SP5, I'll find out early tomorrow if the FD is still
hardcoded. 

BTW: I also opened an issue with Ingres.com, Anxious to see what they say.

Try going the other way:  set the max open fd's to 1024.

Not sure.  There's an implementation glitch on linux that limits Ingres to using 1024 file descriptors.  (Ingres's
problem, not linux's.)   Ingres is supposed to hard-limit
itself to 1024 on linux, but I guess your ingres doesn't have this limit.  You could ask tech support if SP5 does.
