[Info-Ingres] Running Ingres in a 'Virtual Server'

Hi Richard,
We haven't run Ingres on VM's yet but we do run SQL Server on VM's and
it can work nicely. The overhead of the VM software is negligible or
minor at worst. We only use them though for UAT, Test and Development
environments plus a few very small, low volume production databases of
non critical apps. I'm not sure if this is still the case but when I
last checked, one of the benefits touted for Ingres was cost of
ownership. As you only pay for support per CPU (physical) you can make
some great savings and cover your whole business for support.
If we were a larger user of Ingres, I'd certainly be looking into
Icebreaker as a potential solution.

You might want to check out Icebreaker ...

Ingres Corp is billing it as naturally suited to virtualization,
since it has a built-in, stripped-down operating system with a
relatively small footprint, and a single install process. The
whitepaper linked above specifically discusses some of the supposed
advantages in a virtual setting. The argument seems to have merit to me:
for someone thinking of trying to "virtualize" an Ingres installation,
it sounds like it would be the best hope (of course, depends on what
else might be sharing the hardware!)

Subject: [Info-Ingres] Running Ingres in a 'Virtual
Server'
Greetings All,
I have been told (yes, the rumour mill is working
overtime) that our organization is looking at implementing virtual
servers.
Does anyone have an experiences/recommendations about
running a production Ingres installation on a virtual server.
From my 'no-knowledge' position I would regard it as
virtual suicide in terms of performance as the RDBMS would then have the
vm software overhead, plus be competing with all other apps for actual
resource
Thoughts / experiences anyone?
Cheers
Richard
