Thanks for that James.  You are quite right; I may have given the impression 
there is no free Microsoft C compiler.  I've been using the Express Edition 
ever since my crusty old copy of VC 5.0 stopped working.  (I've forgotten. 
I think XP broke it.)

I am motivated mainly by my instictive dislike of Microsoft, and by my 
genuine worry that one day they will shift the goal-posts somehow.  I am 
curious to know what the options are.
